ROY1

Filmed in 1997 - Released in 1997

L1011 In 1992 Royal added it's first widebody aircraft to its fleet when a pair of Lockheed 1011s Tristars were delivered. The airline used these aircraft for cross country and long haul intercontinental flights until 1998 when they were sent to Chile.
Captain Vaughan is in command for a roundtrip flight from Toronto Pearson to Las Vegas. Besides 3 cameras in the cockpit we've also positioned cameras alongside rwy 33 for takeoff in Toronto and rwy 25 Left for landing in Las Vegas. Get a full cockpit description by the Captain and Flight Engineer, follow the checklists, listen to communications with ATC and admire the scenery which is spectacular on this route specially the arrival into Las Vegas.

A310 After 6 years of service, Royal's Tristars were retired and replaced with a series of Airbus A310-300s. The aircraft were used mainly on long haul flights to Europe, just like in this program which takes you to London. We meet our crew in the operations office where they go over the flight plan, weather, notams, fuel requirements, diversion points and more ; once we get to the aircraft we follow the walkaround inspection of our A310. With thunderstorms in the area our aircraft performs a maximum takeoff weight departure from rwy 24R. During the flight Captain Sharp takes you through the cockpit and instrumentation and explains the twin engine over water operations known as ETOPS and we make a morning landing at London's Stansted airport

Just one word, WOW. I waited quite a while for the re-released DVD but it was worth Every minute. Both cockpit presentations, crews, sceneries, just great. A must have in your collection. Thank you WAR, you made my day.
Marcel Laroche, CANADA

I thoroughly enjoyed the "Flight In the Cockpit" series and was excited when purchasing this Two Program WAR DVD. Being able to add more old VHS programs to my collection was also a bonus for me! I specially enjoyed the trip onboard the Lockheed 1011 down to Las Vegas. The scenery was amazing! The Airbus A310 Trans-Atlantic return trip was also well done and with the Voice Over, added to the high level of standard this VHS re-release was presented in. Many Thanks. Matthew Albiston, AUSTRALIA

Best Buy, well done, very clear ATC, great shots. Highly recommended! Michael Carlzen, USA

Compliments to you for your outstanding products... The L1011 Flight in the Cockpit video is nothing short of teriffic!!! Keep up the outstanding work!!! Brian Hussry, USA

I've seen the L1011, and loved it. Keep up the good work! Jeff Sheldon, USA

Just purchase my first video "Royal L1011" and am very impressed. This is my first but not my last. Very well produced.  Michael Gibson, USA

I own this program on VHS and I must say I truly enjoyed it. The flight in the L-1011 from Toronto to Las Vegas return was great. We flew right over the Hoover Dam and the scenery over the Rockies enroute was beautiful. I also liked the landing at night back in Toronto. Any transatlantic crossing proves to be interesting and the flight in the A310-300 from Toronto to London Stansted return was great. We learned about the various communication and navigation duties that are in place when flying across the Atlantic from North America to Europe. I might also buy the DVD of this program eventually. Jeff Schapira, CANADA

Highly recommended for those who like the good old Lockheed Tristar.  Air Lanka(national carrier of Sri Lanka) was a big user of the this grand aircraft. So being a Sri Lankan this DVD has lot of sentimental value for me. In years to come DVDs of this nature will be real treasured memorabilia. Big fight at home for the DVD player, kids wants to watch Barney, Daddy wants to watch the Royal DVD. My wife wants to know why I keep watching the same thing over & over again. My answer-Non aircraft enthusiast never under an aircraft enthusiast. Deepal Perera, SRI LANKA

The Royal L1011 cockpit is excellent. Will be ordering more soon. Alan Healy, IRELAND

The content on this video makes it a great DVD & worth picking up. The original L-1011 video was my first Flight in the Cockpit video & I've been hooked on the series since. The L-1011 flight is great...really neat to see the classic plane at work. ATC is clear & is an added touch to make the video better. Captain Reggie Vaughan & his crew are very inviting to the camera & through explanations & courtesy, help make the video great. The A310 portion is interesting as well. I enjoyed seeing Trans-Atlantic operations from the cockpit & liked getting an idea of how Oceanic navigation works from the video, as well as seeing a takeoff into rough weather without having to ride through the turbulence. Great video overall. Josh Sprague, USA

Special thanks should go to Cpt. Neil Sharp and F/O Tom Melber, the pilots of ROY744 for their contribution (Flight Preparations, External Presentation, Route Information, Cockpit Presentation, and ETOPS Presentation). And Cpt. Jim Marino, the Skipper of ROY745 for his contribution. I strongly recommend this DVDs. I enjoyed the L-1011s flights on the Royal DVD (Flight in Cockpit 17). Special thanks should go to Cpt. Reggie Vaughan, F/O Steve Franezak, and F/E Graham Wale. All three of them did a fantastic job with their detail explanation of the L-1011s (including a complete tour of the cockpit). Plus I enjoyed the scenery as well. John C. McCreery, USA

The Royal L1011 program is outstanding !

This was a great DVD and I recommend it to all who liked the L 1011 and the Airbus A310-300. Great footage on the flight from Toronto to Las Vegas and it was very interesting to actually view the crossing of the Atlantic ocean and seeing how the pilots have to stay in constant radio contact with each other over an uncontrolled area. great approach into Stansted. Keep up the good work World air routes. Lonnie Miller, USA

Royal A310 was excellent. Once again, please keep up the excellent work. Ton Estill, USA

WOW!! I'm speechless, I can't believe how AWESOME they are. I just LOVED the Royal flight, to Las Vegas. I've always wanted to know what it looks like in the cockpit during takeoff and approach. Oh man, I should've become a pilot. I love the clean steady shots you guys did. I will be buying plenty more in the future, guaranteed. Great job guys. Keep up the Great work.. Dan Schwartz, USA

I bought and watched Royal Airlines L1011 cockpit from Toronto to Las Vegas and let me say that it was very professionally done ' very enjoyable. Your programs seem to just get better and better. Eric Huey, US

The Royal L1011 cockpit video is absolutely GREAT and it shows just the right stuff (engine start, taxi, a lot of ATC communications, nice take-off views, a very detailed tour around the cockpit by the Captain and landing views).
Marcus Karlsson, SWEDEN

The L1011 DVD is excellent !! My praise for a job VERY well-done. I tried to watch it for only 5 mins at a time (to make it last longer) but was unable to do so. I'll be looking at your other selections. Also, thank you for placing such a high premium on customer satisfaction. Paul ANSON, USA

OK let me start off by saying I am a huge L-1011 fan and very picky when it comes to L-1011 DVDs. I purchased this title when it was released and VHS and purchased it again when it was re-released on DVD. I have seen quite a few L-1011 presentations in the past…and I have to say that Justplanes simply nails this one. The DVD begins while flight planning is underway in Toronto, we are welcomed by Captain Reggie Vaughan and crew, as they prepare for the flight to Las Vegas.
It’s starts off with the departure from Toronto’s Pearson International, with a view from the cockpit and a picture in picture simultaneous shot from the runway as the L-1011 thunders down the runway and lifts off effortlessly into the sky. It is evident that Captain Vaughan and his entire crew are proud to pilot the Tristar and know the aircraft inside out as they present and explain the L-1011’s cockpit and instrumentation in flawless detail.
The views en route to Las Vegas are simply stunning, including the Grand Canyon and Hover Dam. Communication between the pilots and Air Traffic Control (ATC) are crystal clear and it’s quite impressive to hear the amount of chatter between Las Vegas ATC and the dozens of other aircraft as we make our approach into Las Vegas.
The views on the way back to Toronto are equally as stunning, and the night landing in Toronto is simply spectacular. I didn’t comment on the A310 presentation on this DVD as the L-1011 portion is worth the price of the DVD alone. That being said the crew on board the Royal A310 are very knowledge and it’s quite apparent that they really enjoy what they do. It’s too bad that such a great airline no longer graces our skies. Enjoy!

This DVD features another unique airliner operated by Royal Aviation. The L1011 was an aircraft which was deemed to be ahead of its time with its many innovations.

In the first portion of this DVD we travel onboard the L1011 on a round trip from Toronto to Las Vegas. Some of the highlights you may enjoy are the segments on flight preparation, cabin service, discussions by the captain on various systems, cockpit presentations and the amazing views from the large cockpit windows of the L1011.

The final segment features the A310-300 on a round trip flight from Toronto to Stansted. Some of the highlights that may interest you were the walk around presentation, oceanic clearance and ETOPS presentation and a very thorough cockpit presentation by Capt Sharp.

Overall I thought this was a very interesting DVD and one that is definitely worthy of your consideration.

Review of the A310

This 90 minute video from Just Planes Videos was filmed onboard an Airbus A310-300, registration C-CRYI, of Royal Airlines, based in Canada. The film is a round trip from Toronto Pearson airport to London Stansted airport. Onboard flight 744 is Captain Neil Sharp and his copilot, taking us on this ETOPs flight across the North Atlantic.
We first join the pilots at the briefing room at Toronto airport to discuss the flight plan and the weather situation at the alternates and the final destination of Stansted. Afterwards the film crew follows the copilot on the walk-around while the captain enters flight information into the FMS. The copilot also does a good job at explaining about what he looks for during the walk-around. We then rejoin in the cockpit during which the pilots are having their briefing.

We are to take off on runway 24R during an extremely stormy night at Toronto. Once reaching FL330 Captain Neil Sharp contacts Gander control to get their oceanic clearance. Because of the large amount of other traffic also wanting oceanic clearance ours wasn't received for some time. The oceanic entry point for ROY744 was 5250N, which is roughly over St. John, Newfoundland.

During the crossing Captain Sharp explains about the A310's flight instruments and the systems, i.e. the DME function, the ETOPs procedures, overhead panel, etc. All of which make the job of the flight crew a lot easier and keep the passengers happy. The F/O also has a share in the explanation and describes the FMS. As this video is a round trip Captain Marino takes us back to Toronto on the same aircraft. Once this video had been watched the viewer would immediately have a much greater knowledge of the operation needed for the A310 to serve the passengers. During the whole video the cameraman really did a great job filming the flights. Best is that the two engines are heard very clearly during takeoff and landing. The other sound is great too. ATC during the whole flight can also be heard very clearly. The round trip really is a bonus for viewers to witness the takeoff and the landing at both airports.
