Reviews

Once again we have the opportunity to review another previously sold out DVD title. This DVD features the operations of Canadian North 737-200 and Fokker 28 aircraft. Destinations featured include Yellowknife, Norman Wells, Edmonton, Diavik Mine and Rankin Inlet to name a few.

We start on board the FK28 on a multiple leg trip which takes us from YYC – YZF – YVQ – YFZ – YYC – YZF. Highlights of this trip include a brief introduction from the captain who discusses the flight details, a lovely approach along the coastline into Yellowknife and later clips of Norman Wells. Also featured on this trip is a walk around presentation of the FK28 and an aircraft/cockpit presentation by the first officer.

Most of the action on this DVD is featured onboard the 737-200. Our first trip takes us from YZF – YEG – DVM – YEG. Highlights of this trip include departure and approach briefings and clips of the 737 loading and offloading cargo. Other highlights include an amazing landing on a 5000ft gravel runway at Diavik Mine followed by a walk around of the aircraft with the first officer explaining the various details they look for after landing on a gravel runway.

The departure out of Diavik Mine was also a highlight since it featured the 737 doing a very low circuit around the mine and a cockpit presentation while returning to Edmonton.

The final highlights of this DVD are featured in our final flights from YG – YZF – YRT – YFB – YOW – YFB – YRT – YZF. As you would have noticed, the guys and girls at Canadian North fly very long routes into some of the most challenging airports in the world. Some of the highlights of this trip include multiple camera views which allows the viewers to simultaneously view departures and landings from the wing, outside or the cockpit.

Also, apart from the wonderful scenery and varying flying conditions, the most significant highlight of this trip comes when the Captain discusses how they navigate with their compass in northern Canada. The captain shows the viewers how they use the astro compass to recalibrate their compass when transitioning from the north to southern areas. This was perhaps one of the best features of this DVD as it shows just how well trained the pilots are in navigation and it was also a learning experience for me as a pilot and I am sure everyone will enjoy this.

This DVD provides hours of nonstop fun while being very educational to those of you who want to learn how to use an astro compass or you simply want to enjoy watching the 737 fly into gravel strips. This DVD is a must have!

Just one sentence : REALLY, REALLY GREAT !!!

I have truly enjoyed the Canadian North DVD. It really has met all my expectations. It is an amazing DVD. I especially liked the landing and take offs from Iqaluit as I landed there when I worked up North as a young man many years ago. Barry Crawford, CANADA

The Canadian North DVD is outstanding. I was very interested in the operation of this carrier and after viewing this video we can see just how remote Canada is yet there is such scenic beauty evident in this video. The F28 was truly unique in that we saw a father and son team in the cockpit for the first few flights. It was also unique that this aircraft has dual throttle quadrants for both Captain and F/O. The real treat of this program though was the 737-200 and the flight into Diavik Mine. It looked like the plane was literally landing on a road and the technology involved to do it including a nosewheel skid and vortex dissipators is truly fascinating. The crews gave us nice cockpit details and the astro compass was also a treat to see being used during one of the flights. I liked the transition from wing view to flight deck on the takeoff rolls and landings as well as one landing filmed from the ground and from the wing at the same time in terms of showing it on the screen. This is a must buy for those interested in Northern Canadian flying and in a sense it almost feels like you are in the bush but with jets and not with Beavers. As an aspiring pilot, I watched this video and wondered if perhaps one day I could be at the controls of one of these jets while building my flight experience.

Absolutely awesome...well worth the money. This look into this small Northern carrier is really interesting. Some of the destinations were places I'd never heard of before watching this DVD. It was very interesting to see the pilots have to go to true heading in some navigation & it was neat to see the gravel landing at the Diavik Mine site, literally in the middle of nowhere. Great job with this one! Josh Sprague, USA

A very enjoyable program on Canadian North! Lots of interesting and unusual scenery on this one. The cabin flight aboard the F28 is especially enjoyable. Nice walkarounds of both aircraft types including an interesting explanation of the special equipment required for gravel runway operations on the 737. Also a fascinating presentation of the astro-compass for the very high latitude operations of Canadian North. A very interesting and entertaining program! Greg Rowland, USA

Gentlemen, I'd like to once again compliment you all on a terrific job with the Cockpit DVD's. I have quite a few of them and thoroughly enjoy each one, often for different reasons. Lately the ones that I have been particularly pleased with are the Air Labrador and Canadian North DVD's. Being Canadian, a former Bush Pilot, and now flying mainly through Flight Simulator 2004 (MS), these videos not only bring back good memories, but give me a better sense of realism in the virtual cockpit. Thank you very much for your terrific series, and continued good luck.

I received the new Canadian North DVD, AWESOME! I loved the detailed look at Northern Canada operations. The use of the compass, to flying via True heading, vice versa. Fokker 28 and B737 footage was excellent, especially the gravel strip landing. I hope there are more Canadian airlines featured in the Just planes series! Congrats!

I have just received your latest video, Canadian North. What a great show. It is a wonderful exploration into the north country. All that I've heard of flying in the north seems to be verified in this video. It certainly captures the spirit of the north! Plus, there is plenty of technical data and procedures. Stephen Perkins, CANADA

The Canadian North program is a great DVD! All of the scenery (especially in Yellowknife) is beautiful. The cockpit crews give great detailed instrument and walkaround tours - and the explanation of the special equipment and landing rules necessary for the gravel strip make this title unique. Congratulations on another great production!!
